Obituary

On May 20, 2019, James "Larry" Powell finished his course on earth and went on to heaven from Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Larry was born in Martin, Tennessee, on January 11, 1939, to Robert N. and Kathleen (Crider) Powell.

Larry grew up in Sharon, Tennessee. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1962 aboard the USS Luzon. On moving to Carbondale, Illinois, he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in Illinois and Tennessee until 1987.

On November 22, 1981, Larry accepted Jesus into his heart at Monument Deliverance Church in Carbondale, Illinois, and lived as a follower of Christ his remaining thirty-seven years.

On January 10, 1987, Larry married Mary Nielsen at the Carbondale Church of Community Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary, son Samuel Powell, sister Jan Powell (Mikel) McGrann, and special nephew Darby (Dalleanna) McGrann, all of Murphysboro;

sisters in law Sue (Eric) Vana and Becky (Joe) Swafford;

nieces Bethany (Nick) Lach and Stefani Swiatkowski, and nephews Jacob (Kelci) Reiman, Quinn (JoAnn) Vana, and Isaac (Anne) Vana, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents, a daughter Anna in infancy, a nephew Niel Vana, a sister in law Ruth Nielsen, and a niece Erica Swiatkowski.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the excellent care he received from all the staff at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and step down, ICU and Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

His body will be cremated. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Rick McNeely. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Community Church or to the donor's choice.

Interment will be at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park at a later date.

My condolences to the Powell families. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of dear Larry. Some Bible scriptures that have helped me during times of loss include Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:28,29 which states in part: "Your dead ones will live...They will rise up". And the Bible also says "The righteous themselves will possess the earth and they will forever reside upon it". Therefore the Bible promises that we may be reunited with our loved ones lost in death by means of an earthly resurrection". This is further confirmed by John 5:28,29 which says "Do not marvel at this because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". This is possible thanks to Jesus Christ's ransom sacrifice. Thus we have a genuine hope of everlasting life in a world without wickedness or suffering.
