Obituary for Ruth E Verbal (Vaught)

Ruth E. Verbal, age 91, passed away at 6:52 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Ruth was born on August 14, 1928, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to John Vaught and Gertrude (Martin) Vaught.

Ruth had been a member and past President of the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. Verbal was a member of the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro.

For years, she was a homemaker and worked as a volunteer at the snackbar at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper for the family owned store at Ted and Gene's Big Star Grocery Store, and then she worked as a secretary for the Shawnee National Forest Service for several years. Later she became the secretary at the St. Peter's United Church of Christ retiring after working twenty nine years.

She was the Best Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother ever!

Ruth married Rolla "Gene" Verbal on July 30, 1950, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on October 26, 2002.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Brenda (John) Hammann of Springfield, IL, Richard (Barbara) Verbal and Rhonda Shands, all of Murphysboro;

nine grandchildren Lisa Hammann, Scott Hammann, Angie Keown, Karri Goodnight, Luke (Sarah) Verbal, Amanda Verbal, Travis (Amanda) Shands, Brittni Heilig, Haily (Hunter) Farner;

seven great grandchildren Tessa Verbal, Tyler Verbal, Logan Keown, Jacob Heilig, Noah Heilig, Mason Heilig and Ryder Strodick;

and three great great grandchildren Xavior Haney, Klayton Farner, and Kingston Verbal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, son-in-law Glenn Shands, her sister JoAnn Carter, two brothers, her parents, and three heavenly Shands great grandbabies.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday December 2, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro and burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory.. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, Monday. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or to the Senior Adult Services.
