(Ruth) Virginia (Sanders) Heern, 75, of Murphysboro, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2020, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Virginia was born on April 7, 1944, in Pomona Township, Illinois to Don Sanders and Dora Virginia (Needham) Sanders.

She was the co-owner of Tippey's Restaurant in Murphysboro from 1967-2015. Virginia loved to cook for people, this is the way she showed her love through food. She would take meals or desserts to people who were sick. She also would go to the hospital and pray with patients, and especially, if the patient was terminally ill.

Virginia loved her flowers, working in her yard, feeding the birds and hummingbirds. She loved to go to Nashville, Tennessee and go backstage at the Grand Ole Opera. But her greatest love was her family, she loved doing for them and especially loved shoping for her grandkids.
For a number of years, Mrs. Heern was a member of Christ Community Church in Murphysboro, and more recently was a member of Victory Christian Church in Murphysboro.

Virginia married Jack Heern on January 2, 1979, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on June 9, 2019.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands and children April and Nick Twenhafel and Ella and Hudson, all of Fountain Valley, CA and Kim and Steve Tarr and children Logan Tarr, Olivia Tarr and Jenna Beth Tarr, all of Anna, TX;

and two brothers Eldon Sanders and Larry Sanders, both of Murphysboro.

She was preceded in death by one sister Bernice and two brothers Jerl Sanders and Ronnie Sanders, and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Christ Community Church with Rev. Toedy Holley Duke officiating and burial will be at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pettett Funeral Home and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Community Church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Cancer Society. For more information, please visit

Sorry for the loss of Virginia. We were neighbors growing up out in the country. Larry and Virginia and I were in H.S. as kids. I know she will be greatly missed. Sorry I wasn't able to attend services. God Bless you all.

Kim, April, and families I am so sorry for your loss. You know, I met your mother when she had the little restaurant. She has always been such a special lady in so many ways. Beautiful, caring, compassionate, and pray. I mean she could pray. God love her, when Mike was in the hospital dying she and Jack came to see him and she prayed for him amazingly. I haven't even mentioned her cooking, the best home cooking, ever. As much as we hate to let them go, we must. She is in a beautiful place with her Heavenly Father, Jack, and family. She is so happy now. Peace and Love be with you all.
